IreGaz:  Getting Results (2)

How large is the database ?

A.  Searching for Townlands / Towns / Islands

Your browser will probably not succeed in downloading and showing the full IreGaz dataset (over 65,000 rows, over 13 megaBytes of data). So it's a good idea to enter at least one item in the Search Criteria. To get an idea of how your browser will perform with a large but manageable amount of data:

 1. if you are using broadband:
select a Province (by typing its name, or by point-and-click on the dropdown list), then click Start Search.
Tip: try Connaught first (over 13,000 rows); then Ulster (over 17,000 rows); finally Munster (over 18,000 rows).

 2. if you are using dialup:
select a County (by typing its name, or by point-and-click on the dropdown list), then click Start Search.
Tip: try Carlow first (over 650 rows); then Londonderry (over 1,300 rows); then Kerry (over 2,800 rows); finally Galway (over 4,700 rows).

If your browser ever seems to be having a hard time loading and showing a large amount of data, just press Escape. Then you can go back and choose a more restrictive search.

B.  Other searches

If the checkboxes marked Townland, Town and Island are all unchecked:
 (a) your browser will in most cases have little problem with the amount of data in the result.
 (b) if IreGaz is busy, this sort of search may take a few seconds to process.
